Finsket

Finsket started in 2021 and makes its clothes in Kokkola. The patterns carry the brand — ravens, moss, lynx, birch, everything drawn from what is outside the door — and that creates a specific problem to photograph. A strong print wants to be shown flat and undisturbed, and a garment shown flat tells you nothing about what it is like to wear.

The first shoot was in summer, on a sailing boat. Close quarters, a lot of movement, and clothes that spend most of the day creased, turned away or half out of frame. Not the way you would shoot a pattern for a catalogue, which is exactly why it works: you see the print behaving like fabric on a person rather than artwork on a hanger.

The second was autumn, during the ruska — the few weeks when the north turns colour and then drops it. Walking, open ground, weather doing whatever it wanted. The prints sat inside a landscape they had been drawn from in the first place.

Two seasons, the same approach both times.
